Best Mexican Restaurants

This is a list of the “best of the best” places to eat Mexican food. The list includes some of our favorite hole in the wall or we prefer to call them neighborhood restaurants. All of the restaurants are in California, and most are in Southern California. One common thread between all the restaurants is they all serve Authentic Mexican food and several make homemade tortillas.

To make it hard to order they serve hot chips with three styles of mole sauce. The mole verde is my favorite. Comments: Great food from Yucatan, or Sabores de Yucatecos. Crispy corn tortillas split and filled with black bean puree, and topped with lettuce, shredded turkey onions and avocado. Ceviche de pescado is always a great choice, and their Codzitos crispy taquitos are so good (nothing inside) topped with “Queso de Bola” aged baby Edam cheese.

El Atacor (Potato Tacos)

2622 N. Figueroa St., LA (Cypress Park)

(310) 441-8477

Indeed, the tacos de papas here are deceptively simple, but maybe that's what makes them so sublime: soft, fluffy potato slathered in a tortilla, deep fried and topped with crema and guacamole. Ten of these tacos will disappear in no time, most people order 10 at a time. If your from or have been to El Paso, TX and know about Don Ben’s potato tacos, this is about as close as you get to the potato taco. Open until 2 or 3:00 AM
